ANCHOR HANDLING TUG

ANCHOR HANDLING TUGS (AHTS) FOR ASSISTING AND TOWING DRILLING PLATFORMS

These are all-round vessels mainly used for offshore oil and gas work, but they are also used in offshore wind projects. They are mainly used for towing, setting anchors, installing equipment, providing supplies, and supporting diving operations. These tugboats often have a dynamic positioning system (DP1 or DP2) that helps them stay in the same spot for a long time, even in bad weather. Their strong winches are used to tow drilling platforms and recover large anchors. Many of these tugs also carry extra supplies and liquid materials on deck and in tanks below to support drilling operations. When a tug combines both towing and supply functions, it’s called an anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel.
